Today - March 6, 2023 - marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of my muse, Ella Logan.

Spot the pianist!

Delighted to make my Daily Express comeback - after 20 years - with a previously untold story about the magnificent human being that was Louis Armstrong ❤. It was originally to lead on my dad's near encounter with him but then I got a wonderfully moving anecdote from Scottish clarinettist Forrie Cairns about his experiences of Satch during his 1962 tour of the UK.

Thirty years ago this month, I was living in Paris and heading to the JVC Jazz Festival at Les Halles where, in one amazing night, I got to sample a feast of world-class music. It involved a schlep to the other side of the city, with a very unreliable boyfriend who almost cost me the first gig, but it was still a fantastic night.

This story only tells the half of it. Brian Kellock, who last week opened the Glasgow Jazz Festival along with Paul Harrison (also mentioned in this piece), was fired MID TUNE during his first set at this hotel. It may look like a classy establishment but it is seriously lacking in manners and knowing how to do things. No 5 star hotel I've ever visited would have management that carried on like this. (And thanks to a long side career as a travel and style writer, I've stayed in some of the best and know of what I speak!)

Seems like old times .... positively therapeutic to be back at Dean Street for two gigs featuring birthday boy and peerless bassist Dave Green : first up the mighty Scott Hamilton with his ace London line-up of Dave, Steve Brown and John Pearce (couldn't get a clear sight line for him), then Karen Sharp 's terrific quartet, with Dave, Nikki Iles (ditto re sight line!) & Steve again.

Tomorrow, Thursday 20th, Brian Kellock will be banishing the January blues with the help of Liane Carroll during a Facebook Live streamed concert.

If Pizza Express did LPs .. oh wait, they did!
